Children are born with innate musical talent. This precious gift has to be nurtured in the earliest years of life, or it will wither rather than bloom. Developmental delays and disabilities do not necessarily affect the young childs potential to learn music. Parents of young children with special needs know the power of music to facilitate growth and development. There is a difference, however, between music for learning and learning music. Children with special needs benefit in so many ways from music, and they are so attracted to music that it is easy to lose sight of the process of musical growth and development. Greater understanding of the process of music learning can help parents learn to meet their childs musical needs, whatever their own musical background and whatever the developmental level of their child. Learning music is much like learning language. The prime difference is in the language itself. The young childs thinking mind processes words. The young childs musical mind processes music. A little childs imagination can be captured by words. The little childs musical imagination–another innate potential that is a powerful force from birth–is not captured by words. Its native language is music. Our rich heritage of childrens songs and nursery rhymes nurtures the very essence of childhood and should always be part of growing with music, but the beloved songs and rhymes stimulate language development more than music development. The focus of the delightful songs and rhymes is the words, which speak to the thinking mind rather than the musical mind. The mother-tongue of the musical mind is rhythm (relating to beat) and tonal (relating to pitch), without words. Rhythm alone is most accessible to the young child and provides the foundation for all music learning. Nursery rhymes present a layer of words on top of rhythm, making it more difficult for a child to comprehend the rhythm. Traditional songs layer melody on top of rhythm and words, making it even harder for the young child to understand the rhythm. Additional layers of accompaniments and video images make it still more difficult for the young child to access the rhythm. Favorite childrens songs and nursery rhymes charm, entertain, capture the imagination, and compel a child learning language, but it is songs and chants without words that capture the musical imagination and engage the young childs musical talent.

In this paper, three metaheuristics are proposed for solving a class of job shop, open shop, and mixed shop scheduling problems. We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms by means of a set of Lawrences benchmark instances for the job shop problem, a set of randomly generated instances for the open shop problem, and a combined job shop and open shop test data for the mixed shop problem. The computational results show that the proposed algorithms perform extremely well on all these three types of shop scheduling problems. The results also reveal that the mixed shop problem is relatively easier to solve than the job shop problem due to the fact that the scheduling procedure becomes more flexible by the inclusion of more open shop jobs in the mixed shop. Keywords: Machine scheduling; open shop; job shop; mixed shop; metaheuristics. In combinatorial optimization, machine scheduling problems have been the subjects of extensive research since the early 1950s (Baker, 1974). Many of the early developments were motivated by problems arising in the area of manufacturing. The machine scheduling problems that we consider in this study can be described as follows: Given m machines and n jobs, the jobs are to be processed on the m machines. A schedule specifics, for each machine i and each job j, a time interval throughout which processing is performed on job j by machine i. A schedule is feasible if each job can only be processed on one machine and each machine can only process one job at a time, and also if it satisfies various requirements imposed on the jobs and machines relating to the specific problem type. According to the machine environment and job characteristics, machine scheduling problems can be divided into two production systems: single-stage system and multi-stage system. A single-stage system requires one operation for each job, whereas in a multi-stage system there are jobs that require operations on different machines. Single-stage systems involve either a single machine referred to as the single-machine scheduling problem, or m machines in parallel referred to as the parallel-machine scheduling problem. In multi-stage systems, there are three types of basic shop scheduling problems: the flow shop scheduling (FSS) problem, the job shop scheduling (JSS) problem, and the open shop scheduling (OSS) problem. In a flow shop, each job is processed on machines 1, . . . , m in this unidirectional fixed order. In a job shop, each job has a prescribed routing through the machines, but the routing for each job may be different. In an open shop, the routing through the machines is unrestricted and forms a part of the decision process. The objective function of minimizing the maximum completion time (makespan) is the main focus in most studies for shop scheduling problems in the literature.

fast weight loss

July 3rd, 2009

One possible health outcome that may be adversely affected by intentional weight loss is immune function. Natural killer (NK) cells, a subset of mononuclear cells, which are an important component of the immune system, lack antigen-specific receptors and are capable of killing cancer cells and virus-infected cells. The aim of a cross-sectional study was to investigate history of intentional weight loss and associations with NK cytotoxicity and lymphocyte subpopulations among healthy, overweight, postmenopausal women. It was hypothesized that repeated intentional weight loss may be associated with lower immune function measures. The subjects (n=114) were a subset of a female study population recruited for an exercise intervention trial. The subjects had to meet the following criteria: postmenopausal, age 50 to 75 years, in good health; sedentary; nonsmoking; and had been at a stable body weight for at least 3 months. Body weight and height was measured. The subjects completed a questionnaire that included the following question: “Within the last 20 years, when you were not pregnant or sick, did you ever lose 10 pounds or more on purpose?” In other questions, women were queried regarding how often they had lost between 120 lb and 19 lb, between 20 lb and 49 lb, 50 lb or more, and how long they had been within 10 lb of their current weight. Demographic information was obtained. Food frequency questionnaires were used to assess dietary intake and alcohol consumption. The use of nutritional supplements was ascertained. Flow cytometry was used to measure NK cytotoxicity at four effector-to-target (E:T) ratios and four enumerating phenotyping lymphocytes. Multiple linear regression was used to investigate associations between weigh loss within the past 20 years and current immune function. Women who reported ever intentionally losing > 10 lbs were found to have lower measured NK cytotoxicity than those who did not (24.7% [+ or -] 12.1% vs. 31.1% [+ or -] 14.7%, respectively, at E:T 25:1; P = .01). Additionally, increasing frequency of previous intentional weight loss was associated with lower NK cytotoxicity (P = .003, trend). As an independent predictor, longer duration of recent weight stability was associated with higher NK cytotoxicity (21.6% [+ or -] 11.9%, 24.4%[+ or -] 11.0%, and 31.9%[+ or -] 14.4% for <2,>2 to <5, and >5 years of weight stability, respectively; P = .0002, trend). The frequency of weight loss episodes was also associated with differences in the number and proportion of NK cells.
This is part 4 of 12 in the series on weight management for people with spinal-cord impairments (SCI). This months focus is on setting personal goals. Goals give you purpose and direction and keep you on track to better health. You probably had a “goal weight” in mind when you started a weight-loss program. It is important to remember that losing weight too quickly puts you at risk for health problems such as gall stones, electrolyte imbalance, and lean-muscle loss. In fact, any weight loss can improve health for people who are obese. It is better to maintain a moderate weight loss over a prolonged period than to regain from a marked weight loss. A person who is obese and weighs 250 pounds might lose as much as 5 pounds in a week, which is about 2%. Someone who is overweight and weighs 200 pounds might lose as much as 2 pounds in one week, which is about 1%. The rate at which you lose weight declines over time because your body metabolism slows down with weight loss. Research shows that in a well-designed weight-loss program, it is generally achievable to lose weight by about 10% in six months. If this initial target is achieved, fuller weight loss can be considered. Diet and physical activity usually need to be revised in six months to continue to lose weight.

Dental Whitening

July 3rd, 2009

Dear Dr. Cory:
Why do our teeth only grow back once after we Iose our baby teeth? Your first set of teeth grows in when you are approximately 6 months old. These baby teeth, or deciduous teeth, grow in at a size that fits your jawbone at the time. As you get older, most parts of your body-including your jawbone–continue to grow. But your teeth stay the same size. Eventually, your baby teeth become too small for your larger jaw.

The laser industry is poised for substantial growth, reports Frost Sullivan (Mountain View, CA). Global demand for industrial laser systems should grow from $1.2 billion in 1992 to more than $2 billion by the end of the decade. Major technical trends include higher power for sealed carbon dioxide (CO sub 2 ) laser systems and Nd:YAG laser systems, new crystals for tunable solid-state laser systems, blue diode lasers with output near 623 nm, and 193 nm excimer lasers for industrial applications. These new laser technologies are replacing existing laser systems as well as other manufacturing techniques. Examples include using tunable solid-state lasers instead of dye lasers and diode lasers in place of helium neon (HeNe) laser systems. In related news, the US Department of Energys Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne, IL), operated by the University of Chicago, and Spawr Industries (Lake Havasu City, AZ), a specialist in high-power laser technology, are partners in a two-year project to improve lenses and mirrors to shape laser beams for industrial use. The cooperative RD agreement also may improve laser thermal simulation in testing components found in jet engines and particle accelerators for their ability to withstand heat. The projects primary focus is improving Spawrs radiometric power meter for high-energy lasers. The conventional measurement method takes 10 sec to absorb the total laser beam; the Spawr instrument measures laser power in one second by sampling a known fraction of the laser light and has a wider application range. Additional research areas include improving coatings for Spawrs laser dump to handle high-power density laser beams. The dump absorbs laser energy while a beam is tuned for a specific application. An example of Nd:YAG lasers displacing conventional processing comes from the Raycon Laser Group (Ann Arbor, MI), developers of a flexible system for laser scribing and drilling powder-metal (PM) connecting rods. Two stress risers (the starting points for fracture splitting the lower crankshaft journal bore from the upper journal bore) are created by producing V-shaped notches 180deg apart in the crank bore. The rods–consisting of carbon copper, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, chromium, nickel, oxygen, and iron–offer greater precision performance, improved weight accuracy over conventional metal rods, and reduced manufacturing costs. Prior scribing methods–broaching the V-shaped notch or producing it with a forging die–required higher forces to split the rods. The laser scribing process begins at the bottom of the journal surface and moves upward to blow slag through the kerf. The inside journal surface is mounted at 45deg to the beam to allow for nozzle clearance. Kerf width is between 0.008 and 0.010″ (0.20 and 0.25 mm), and depth is 0.020-0.030″ (0.51-0.76 mm). Feed rate, which affects kerf depth and the slag buildup, is 60 ipm (1524 mm/min). To help produce a clean scribe, oxygen assistance at 70 psi (480 kPa) and a high-power YAG at 120 W also are used. According to Raycon, the force required to fracture a laser scribe stress riser is only 3000-8000 lb (13 500-35 500 N), whereas the force required for a broach scribe is 18,000 lb (80 000 N). The V-shape method is economical because it reduces the stages of manufacturing, increases the load-bearing capability of the part, and produces a perfect fit between the rod and cap.

Transformers

Abstract: Dynamical behaviour analysis of energetic transformers is presented in this paper. Physical and basic mathematical background necessary for dynamical behaviour analysis is explained. Case of switching unbiased transformer on gird and switch current analysis are described. Switch voltage appearance in cases transformer switching and breaking from gird in normal drive is explained. Simulations of energetic transformer switching and breaking from gird using DIgSILENT program is given. Key words: analysis, switching, transformer, simulation, The main topic of this paper is model for testing power transformer in cases of inrush current appearance, when unloaded transformer is switched on gird, and case of appearance of switch voltage in normal drive. This testing is made in DIgSILENT program on 50 MVA power transformer. The term power transformer (Fig. 1) is used to refer on those transformers used between the generator and distribution circuits, and these are usually rated at 500 kVA and above ( Sim Digby, 2004). Inrush current is the magnetizing current that creates during switching of unloaded transformer on gird (Kelemen, 1997). Inrush current appears because of residual flux that remains in the core due to the properties of the magnetic core materials. Magnitude of this current can be 3.5 to 40 times bigger then rated full-load current and can cause many problems. This inrush current can have an effect on the operation on relays and fuses located in the system near the transformer (Sim Digby, 2004). Model for testing transformer on inrush current is also made in ATP program (Maric, et all., 2006) where presented results can help in prevention of undesirable effects that inrush current causes. Controlled switching can reduce the undesirable effect of inrush current. The actual controlled switching devices operate with high voltage circuits breakers but only in normal cases: usual manual switching of network components like power transformers, lines loads, etc. (Munteanu, 2006).

SAN DIEGO — The state of Georgia recently enacted life-settlement provider licensing requirements, and Life Settlement Solutions Inc., one of the nations premier sources of life-settlement funding, was among the first life-settlement providers to receive a license under the law. Georgia issued Life Settlement Solutions viatical (life) settlement provider license Jan. 12, 2007. Life Settlement Solutions has done business in Georgia since 2003, prior to life-settlement transactions being regulated in that state. The state expanded its viatical settlement laws to include life settlements, effective Nov. 5, 2005. Prior to the enactment of the 2005 legislation, life-settlement companies were allowed to conduct business in the state without licensing requirements. The new law provided for a transitional provision that permitted life-settlement providers previously conducting life settlements in the state to continue doing so while their license applications were pending, so long as the application was filed within 30 days following the effective date of the act. Life Settlement Solutions application was filed within that 30-day period, so there has been no interruption with the firms ability to conduct business in Georgia. “In addition to application materials, biographical submissions by officers, background checks and a review of Life Settlement Solutions plan of operations, Georgia also utilized a field-examination process under which it retained an independent examination firm that conducted a field audit of Life Settlement Solutions business practices and a review of closed case files,” said Larry Simon, president and founder of Life Settlement Solutions. “Our unblemished regulatory and compliance track record speaks highly to our ability to obtain licensing in every life-settlement regulated state throughout the nation. We are very pleased to be among the first life-settlement companies to be granted licensing in Georgia.”

INTRODUCTION Packaging is an ideal application for digital printing because of the amount of variable information involved. Traditionally, packaging materials have been printed with offset, gravure, or flexography (1), but in this study the printing has been conducted with a digital printing technique, i.e., dry-toner electrophotography. In digital printing the information can be flexibly changed and easily updated. Digital printing allows customization and personalization for selected target groups. Compared with the traditional printing techniques, the volumes are quite small; digital printing is mainly suitable for short runs of highly personalized packages. The obvious benefit of digital printing is the low waste amount and print-on-demand. The status of digital printing in the packaging sector is still rather moderate, but the future looks bright, and estimates show that the use of this method will increase more than that of the traditional printing techniques (2). The quality of digital printing will also approach that of the traditional techniques. The extrusion coatings used in packaging applications include polyolefins (polyethylene, PE; polypropylene, PP), copolymers (e.g., ethylene methyl acrylate, E/MA), adhesives (e.g., acid copolymers), barrier polymers (e.g., polyamide, PA), and other polymers (e.g., polyethylene terephthalate, PET) (3). Based on a pilot trial that included a polymer from each of these groups, three polymers were chosen for more detailed examination: low-density polyethylene (PE-LD), ethylene methyl acrylate (E/MA), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). PE-LD is the highest-volume polymer used in the extrusion coating industry. It is easy to process, it provides an adequate moisture barrier, and it has excellent chemical resistance and heat-sealing properties. In addition to these advantages is the low cost (3, 4). The only problem with PE-LD observed during the pilot trial is the low digital print quality. E/MA is a copolymer of ethylene and methyl acrylate containing typically 5%-20% methyl acrylate. E/MA adheres well to various substrates, and its heat-sealing properties are better than those of PE-LD (3). E/MA had the best print quality of all the polymers used in the pilot trial. PET films outstanding properties as a food-packaging material are its excellent chemical resistance and stability over a wide range of temperatures (-60[degrees]C to 220[degrees]C) (3, 4). PET also had good printability properties. With extrusion coatings, a common problem is the inadequate adhesion between a polymer coating and the printing ink. The most common methods to improve adhesion properties of polymer coatings are different surface treatments. These include flame, corona, and ozone treatments (3). The corona-discharge treatment is widely used to increase the wettability and the adhesion properties of extrusion coated boards (5, 6). With corona treatment, the surface energy of the printing material is increased by subjecting it to a high-voltage electrical charge. The surface molecules, previously arranged at random, are brought into a common pattern by this electrical charge. During corona treatment, three phenomena occur: (a) a chemical effect, (b) a physical effect (micropitting), and (c) an electrostatic effect (electret effect) (7-10). The chemical effect includes surface oxidation and formation of low-molecular-weight compounds. The corona-treatment effect is based on bombarding the surface of a polymer with electrons. When these come into contact with the polymer surface, they have so much energy that they break the molecular bonds between carbon-hydrogen or carbon-carbon, and, in consequence, very reactive free radicals form on the surface. At the same time, ozone and oxygen radicals form that react with the radicals on the surface. As a result, chemical functional groups form on the substrate surface. Polar functional groups that can form and enhance bondability include carbonyl (C=O), carboxyl (COOH), hydroperoxide (-OOH), hydroxyl (-OH), and amide (-CONH[.sub.2]) groups. Even a small amount of these reactive functional groups incorporated into polymers can be highly beneficial to improving surface characteristics and wettability (3, 7, 9, 11-15). Some polymers already contain these reactive groups in their basic structure, for example, the methyl acrylate groups of E/MA are highly polar (see Fig. 1) (3). In contrast, polyolefins, like PE-LD, need corona treatment to form these groups into their structure. With polyolefins, the treatment polarizes the long-chain polymer molecules into shorter-chain fragments and oxidizes the ends of these smaller sections, creating mainly ether and hydroxyl groups (16).

From its unique perspective at the science, commerce and industry interface, CI magazine offers a vibrant mix of news, reviews, features and research highlights.
This industry report focuses upon the Aluminium Extruded Product Manufacturing industry. This U.S. industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in (1) extruding aluminium bar, pipe, and tube blooms or extruding or drawing tube from purchased aluminium; and/or (2) recovering aluminium from scrap and extruding bar, pipe, and tube blooms or drawing tube in integrated mills. 331316 - Aluminium Extruded Product Manufacturing 33131 - Alumina and Aluminium Production and Processing
Nine aluminum trade associations from six continents have combined efforts to promote aluminum applications in the global automotive market. The cooperative effort was announced at the Aluminum Associations annual meeting in Dearborn, Michigan, on September 9. Collaborating on the effort are the Aluminum Association (Washington, D.C.), International Primary Aluminium Institute (IPAI) (London), European Aluminium Association (Brussels), the Australia Aluminium Council (Manuka, Australia), the Aluminium Association of India (Bangalore, India), the AssociacAo Brasileira Do Aluminio (Sdo Paulo, Brazil), the Japan Aluminium Federation (Tokyo), the Aluminium Assocoation of Canada (Montreal), and the Aluminium Federation of South Africa (Isando, South Africa). Discussions on the alliance began earlier this year when the Aluminum Associations Auto and Light Truck Group was invited to make a presentation at the IPAI annual meeting in Montreal, Canada. A meeting in Brussels followed. Initially, the collaboration will set up mechanisms to more closely share information on automotive applications, issues, and research on an ongoing basis. Once communication is established, it is expected the international group will cooperate on joint research and marketing projects designed to meet the needs of automotive customers. To provide communication opportunities for the association executives, the organizations will meet twice yearly through the IPAI.

The new NLP2040 and NLP3040 physical layer devices offer the industrys most highly integrated 10 Gigabit Ethernet PHY technology with best-in-class performance and lowest power consumption for next-generation networking, server and storage systems MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — NetLogic Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: NETL), the leader in the design and development of knowledge-based processors and high-speed integrated circuits, today announced the industrys first quad-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) physical layer (PHY) SerDes devices that deliver the highest performance and lowest power consumption for next-generation switches, routers and blade servers addressing the data center, enterprise networking, storage and service provider markets. NetLogic Microsystems new NLP2040 and NLP3040 PHY devices, targeted at SFP+ and 10GBASE-KR backplane applications, respectively, integrate its industry-leading electronic dispersion compensation (EDC), pre-emphasis on the 10G transmit lane and forward error correction (FEC) technology, respectively to support the IEEE 10GBASE-LRM and 10GBASE-KR standards. The market for 10 Gigabit Ethernet PHY is growing rapidly in data center, enterprise and carrier networks, driven by the increasing demand for bandwidth-hungry video content and virtualization. Industry analysts expect the market for 10GbE PHY to grow tenfold in port count over the next five years, representing 58 percent CAGR over that period. To keep up with this growth in bandwidth, network managers are demanding networking equipment, server and storage systems with significantly lower power and smaller form factor that provide a higher density of 10GbE ports. NetLogic Microsystems quad-port NLP2040 and NLP3040 devices offer power savings and footprint reduction over competing dual-port solutions, thereby allowing customers to develop higher density switches and blade servers for next-generation data centers. In addition, the NLP2040 and NLP3040 PHY devices offer an ultra low-power mode which allows customers to power down certain operations on chip to further reduce power consumption. “As the first in the industry with quad-core 10GbE products, we are uniquely positioned to drive the market for higher density and lower power solutions at our customer base,” said Stefanos Sidiropoulos, vice president of Physical Layer Products at NetLogic Microsystems. “The new NLP2040 and NLP3040 products further extend our market and technology leadership in 10GbE PHY solutions and enable us to provide our customers with the most innovative and comprehensive portfolio of field-proven 10GbE PHY solutions for fiber, backplane and twin-axial copper cables.”

Happy Vacations is the first travel wholesaler to offer a honeymoon registry, providing a unique and powerful sales tool for travel agents, extending honeymoon services to wedding couples. With the Happy Honeymoon Registry, travel agents not only offer expertise on honeymoon travel, but can then help couples fund their honeymoon experience as well. Couples using Happy Honeymoon Registry service book their honeymoon with their travel agent and then register the items and romantic activities of their honeymoon as wedding gifts. Wedding guests then select and purchase from an array of items, for example, a day of snorkeling, a sunset dinner cruise, kayaking, couples massage, hot-air ballooning and airfare contributions. According to Conde Nast Bridal Media, 10% of U.S. brides now register for honeymoons. In addition, consumers are spending more money than ever “doing things” rather than owning things. This has created a perfect market for experiential wedding gifts and the gift of travel. “It only made sense to offer a honeymoon registry to provide both travel agents and their clients with a unique option,” says Nancy Williams, Director of Happy Honeymoon Registry. “Many couples dont need or want the traditional wedding gifts of china or toasters. We help make their wedding memorable with a very special gift - their honeymoon. And travel agents reap the benefit, because couples using our honeymoon registry spend more on their honeymoon packages resulting in larger commissions for the travel agent.” Wedding parties average 166+ guests, giving travel agents the additional opportunity to market their travel services to the friends and family of the bride and groom. Many travel agents create and print registry announcement cards for their clients, including their travel agency contact information. According to travel agent Leslie Bryant of TravelWizard.com, “My clients love the registry. They love that they can receive a memorable activity or room upgrade that they might not have been able to afford themselves. Its a much better wedding gift than another toaster or set of wine glasses! For me as a travel agent, its an invaluable sales tool.”
